What This Work Taught Me
From Social Discovery to Social Coordination
Early versions of Kardder focused on helping users discover nearby people with shared interests. Over time, research revealed that users were often seeking something broader: ways to participate in communities, discover activities, and navigate their social environments.
As a result, the product evolved beyond profile discovery. Events, clubs, spatial discovery, and community participation became increasingly central to the experience.
The following sections describe how those insights shaped the platform's evolution.
The Product System
Although users experienced Home, Browse, Events, Clubs, and Profiles as separate features, they were designed to function as a connected social system. Decisions made in one area of the product frequently influenced behavior throughout the rest of the platform.
As Kardder evolved, product challenges rarely involved optimizing a single feature in isolation. Instead, they required balancing competing tensions across the broader ecosystem, including autonomy and guidance, discovery and privacy, flexibility and simplicity, and visibility and emotional safety.
These tradeoffs became especially important because Kardder operated within dense, real-world communities where online interactions often carried offline consequences.
Over time, the work shifted from designing individual features toward designing coordinated systems that reduced friction between social intent and real-world action.

Market Landscape
The broader social and events ecosystem is highly fragmented across products optimized for narrow behavioral use cases.
Traditional social platforms excel at content consumption, identity expression, and engagement, but often struggle to facilitate real-world coordination. Event platforms provide effective logistical infrastructure but remain disconnected from persistent social identity and ongoing community participation. Professional networking tools support structured relationship building but generally lack locality, spontaneity, and real-time social context.
As a result, users frequently moved between multiple products to accomplish what was ultimately a single social objective: discovering opportunities, meeting people, participating in activities, and maintaining connections over time.
This fragmentation became increasingly evident throughout our research. Users were forced to navigate separate systems for discovery, communication, coordination, attendance, and community participation. While each platform solved part of the problem effectively, none provided a cohesive pathway from social interest to real-world engagement.
That gap became the foundation for Kardder's product strategy.

Strategic Positioning
Rather than competing directly within a single category, Kardder was designed to operate at the intersection of social discovery, local coordination, community participation, and event infrastructure.
The underlying hypothesis was that these systems became substantially more valuable when connected together.
Profiles, events, clubs, posts, messaging, and discovery surfaces were treated as complementary behavioral systems rather than independent features. A user might discover an event through Home, attend through a club, meet new people through participation, continue conversations through messaging, and later reconnect through ongoing community activity.
The platform's value did not emerge from any individual feature in isolation. It emerged from reducing the friction between social curiosity and real-world participation.
This perspective influenced several major product decisions, including prioritizing events as a core coordination layer, embedding discovery throughout the product rather than isolating it, designing for persistent local identity, and later introducing Kami to help users navigate increasing platform complexity.

Designing the Onboarding and First Impression
One of the earliest product challenges involved onboarding friction and product framing.
Early onboarding required extensive profile completion before users could meaningfully engage with the platform. The process was lengthy, cognitively demanding, and unintentionally framed Kardder as a dating-oriented product through certain prompts and required disclosures.
To better understand the problem, I conducted in-situ field research with more than 900 UCLA students. Observing onboarding behavior revealed that users were reluctant to invest heavily in profile construction before understanding what the platform actually offered.
In response, I redesigned onboarding around progressive investment. Mandatory requirements were reduced, optional personalization was deferred, nonessential steps became skippable, and users entered the live product experience much earlier.
The guiding principle was allowing users to experience value before asking for deeper commitment. This redesign reduced account creation time from approximately 9–11 minutes to 2–4 minutes while clarifying product positioning and improving downstream engagement.

Home as the Center of Gravity
As Kardder matured, behavioral telemetry and observational research revealed a consistent pattern: users naturally gravitated toward Home.
While Browse had originally been envisioned as the primary destination for discovering new people, users repeatedly demonstrated a preference for lower-friction forms of engagement. Rather than actively searching for profiles, they spent much of their time consuming stories, community updates, and lightweight social content that helped them stay aware of what was happening around them.
This observation led to a broader realization: discovery was not a separate activity. It was often a byproduct of participation.
Rather than requiring users to navigate dedicated discovery workflows, I reframed Home as the platform's center of gravity. I redesigned the Home experience to surface people, events, communities, and opportunities directly within existing behavioral flows, allowing users to encounter new connections naturally while engaging with the product.
While discovery became increasingly embedded within Home, Browse remained an important environment for intentional exploration and experimentation with alternative discovery models.

Rethinking Profile Discovery and Interaction
Browse was designed as a low-pressure discovery environment where users could freely explore people, clubs, events, and recommendations. Unlike traditional swipe-based products that present one profile at a time, Browse functioned more like a neighborhood of opportunities, allowing users to navigate profiles based on shared interests, activity status, verification, and community relevance.
As the product evolved, we experimented with different interaction models within this discovery experience. One version required users to either connect with or reject a profile before continuing to browse. While this increased immediate interaction rates, research revealed meaningful drawbacks. Users reported feeling pressured to make decisions prematurely, and rejected profiles became effectively hidden from future discovery, reducing opportunities for organic connection.
To understand these tradeoffs, I led a mixed-methods research initiative combining usability testing, A/B experimentation, behavioral telemetry, and engagement analysis. The findings consistently suggested that users explored more broadly, returned more frequently, and felt more comfortable when discovery remained open-ended and voluntary.
The result was a non-forced discovery model that prioritized exploration, autonomy, and user comfort. More importantly, it reinforced a broader product principle: meaningful connections emerge when people are given space to explore, rather than being pushed toward immediate decisions.

Spatial Discovery and Local Context
As Kardder evolved, it became increasingly clear that social activity was deeply tied to place. Unlike traditional social networks, many interactions occurred within dense geographic communities where events, stories, and spontaneous activity became more meaningful when viewed in local context.
To address this, we introduced a spatial discovery system that made location a primary layer of the product. Rather than relying solely on feed-based discovery, users could explore nearby activity, discover local events, and identify emerging hotspots in real time.
The map unified community posts, live events, and participation density into a shared geographic experience, helping users move seamlessly between digital discovery and real-world participation. By making proximity and local momentum visible, location became an active tool for connection rather than a passive attribute.

Events as a Core Social Primitive
Over time, one insight became increasingly clear:
People were often more willing to connect around shared activities than through profile-based introductions alone.
Profiles communicate identity. Events communicate context, purpose, and participation.
Through interviews, product observation, and ongoing iteration, we found that events created a lower-pressure pathway into social interaction by giving people a shared purpose, a defined time and place, and clear expectations before meeting.
Rather than treating events as a supporting feature, Kardder increasingly positioned them as a primary mechanism for community formation. The goal shifted from simply helping users discover people to helping them discover experiences where meaningful social interaction could happen naturally.
Empowering Organizers
Creating an event involved more than publishing a time and location. Organizers needed tools to manage privacy, attendance, logistics, and payments without introducing unnecessary complexity.
The event creation flow emphasized flexible participation controls such as verified guests, approval workflows, location privacy, and ticketing, while providing a dedicated interface for reviewing requests and managing attendees. Integrated wallet functionality enabled organizers to monitor balances and manage event-related payments from a single place.
Together, these capabilities supported everything from small spontaneous gatherings to larger community events while giving organizers confidence that they remained in control of the experience.

Reducing Friction for Attendees
For attendees, the experience focused on reducing uncertainty before meeting new people.
Event pages communicated who was attending, what the activity involved, where it would take place, and when important information would become available. Live updates and guest visibility helped transform unfamiliar gatherings into experiences that felt more transparent and approachable.
Rather than encouraging conversations to begin through profile browsing alone, the product encouraged relationships to emerge through shared participation. By reducing friction around event discovery and attendance, events became one of Kardder's most effective mechanisms for facilitating real-world connection.

Clubs, Membership, and Visibility Control
As Kardder expanded beyond one-to-one interactions, clubs introduced a new set of challenges around participation, visibility, and trust.
Early product assumptions treated visibility as a club-level decision. Users would join either public or private communities, with access and participation governed by a single set of rules. However, concept testing revealed that users rarely thought about visibility in such fixed terms.
Instead, comfort levels varied depending on the specific interaction. A user might be comfortable sharing one post broadly while wanting another visible only to trusted members. Participation preferences were shaped less by the club itself than by the context surrounding each contribution.
This revealed an important behavioral insight: privacy and visibility preferences are often situational rather than static.
In response, the platform evolved from rigid membership-based visibility models toward more flexible audience controls that allowed users to determine how individual contributions were shared. This enabled broader community participation without sacrificing personal control.
The underlying principle was simple: trust is strengthened when users can decide not only where they participate, but also who can see what they share.

Feedback Systems & Trust
Across the platform, I paid close attention to feedback systems and behavioral legibility.
Social products quickly break down when users become uncertain whether an action succeeded, who can see their activity, whether content posted correctly, or whether a social interaction was received. In these situations, ambiguity increases hesitation and social friction.
To reduce uncertainty, I designed lightweight but intentional feedback systems throughout the platform, including toast notifications, loading states, confirmation patterns, visibility indicators, and contextual system feedback.
While individually small, these interactions played a disproportionate role in building trust by making system behavior understandable and predictable. This became especially important for socially sensitive actions such as sending connection requests, posting within clubs, purchasing event tickets, and managing visibility settings.
In sunmary, users participate more confidently when systems communicate clearly.

Kami and Human Intent
As Kardder expanded, research revealed that users often knew what they wanted to do, but not which feature or workflow would help them accomplish it.
Users approached the platform with intentions rather than navigation paths.

Traditional interfaces require users to translate those intentions into tabs, filters, categories, and workflows before action can occur. This creates friction at precisely the moment users are trying to engage.
Kami was designed to remove that translation burden.
Rather than functioning as a standalone assistant, Kami acted as an orchestration layer across Kardder's existing systems. By interpreting natural language, contextual signals, interests, location, and behavioral patterns, it helped users move from vague intent to concrete social action.
Instead of asking users to decide where to begin, Kami recommended relevant people, events, clubs, and activities based on what they were trying to accomplish. The objective was not simply to make search easier, but to reduce cognitive overhead by allowing users to express goals naturally while the platform coordinated the appropriate product workflows.

Reflection
Over several years of product development, Kardder evolved from a platform centered on profile discovery into a broader system for social coordination and community participation. Along the way, one lesson became increasingly clear: successful social products are designed around human behavior rather than idealized user flows.
Research repeatedly showed that users preferred exploration over pressure, participation over self-promotion, and shared experiences over isolated interactions. These insights shaped product decisions ranging from onboarding and profile discovery to events, community systems, and eventually Kami.
The experience also reinforced that designing social products is fundamentally an exercise in balancing competing needs. Discovery must coexist with privacy, visibility with control, and engagement with autonomy. The most effective solutions were rarely those that encouraged more interaction, but those that reduced uncertainty and made participation feel easier, safer, and more natural.
Most importantly, Kardder changed how I think about product design. Rather than viewing features as independent experiences, I came to see them as interconnected systems that influence one another over time. Whether designing consumer applications, internal tools, or research programs, I continue to approach product development by identifying the underlying behavioral systems that shape user decisions and designing those systems to be more coherent, trustworthy, and effective.
